BorderBeat

For Teachers & Homeschool

Continent drills and a five-minute daily. Free on classroom iPads.

BorderBeat is an outline game: a laser traces a country's border and you have until the line cools to name it (about 14 seconds). 207 countries and territories, 6 continents. The parts a classroom uses are free, and there are no ads anywhere in the app.

Where this came from

My daughter can land in the top 5% on every web geography game she touches. I wanted one that would still challenge her but stay playable for someone like me, so we built it together. I'm the geography amateur in the house; I learned most of these borders by testing my own game.

As for why this page exists: GeoGuessr went subscription-only, and the reviews on most free geography apps are full of ad complaints. Classrooms keep losing their warm-up drill to one or the other. The daily and Chill Mode here are free with no ads and no account, and there's no ad framework in the app to switch on later.

Chill Mode

Continent Drills  //  Self-Paced

Pick a continent and drill its countries. No timer, no strikes, no score. If your unit is South America, drill just South America. All 6 continents are open from the first launch, and Chill Mode has no play cap.

The Daily

Quotidian  //  5-Minute Bell-Ringer

One 25-country puzzle per day, identical for everyone worldwide, one attempt each. Wrong answers cost points but never end the run, so every student finishes. Figure about 5 minutes. Put it on the projector and let the room vote, or let each iPad race the same board.

Ways to run it

  • Bell-ringer: today's daily on the projector while you take attendance. Same puzzle in every classroom on Earth, done in about 5 minutes.
  • Unit drills: point Chill Mode at whatever continent you're covering. Self-paced, repeatable, and nobody strikes out.
  • Early-finisher station: an iPad with Chill Mode open. No login, no setup, nothing to supervise.
  • Homeschool: the daily as the morning warm-up, Chill Mode matched to the continent you're on, and the competitive modes once the borders stick.

What it doesn't do

  • It's iOS only. iPhone and iPad on iOS 26 or later (the laser reveal is a GPU effect). No web version, no Chromebook, no Android. If your room isn't an iPad room, this won't help you.
  • There's no teacher dashboard. No rostering, no progress reports, no class management. It's a drill.
  • Where the money is: optional one-time unlocks in the competitive roguelike mode (more daily runs, more modifier cards, the archive of past dailies). The daily and Chill Mode are never capped and never paywalled. No subscription, no energy timers, nothing expires.
  • Student privacy: no accounts, no sign-ins, and nothing personal is asked of students. No third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising. Leaderboards run through Apple's Game Center on the device, and a switch in settings turns off even the anonymized difficulty telemetry. Details in the Privacy Policy.
