The five tiers
Any standard OBD-II vehicle — cars and trucks 1996+ — connects automatically. The 30 off-road machine families below fall into five tiers by how they hand over their data:
A tier is a claim, and we only badge what we can back up: ✓ Field-verified means it's proven on real hardware, and Not yet verified marks an educated expectation from platform sharing that we haven't checked on the actual machine yet. Unmarked rows are researched — grounded in service documentation and owner-community reports.
Standard OBD-II Plug & play
These answer standard OBD-II over CAN. Plug in an adapter and RPM, speed, and engine vitals show up automatically — nothing to teach.

J1939 CAN (automatic) Automatic
Powersports and diesel utility machines that broadcast SAE J1939 — the open heavy-vehicle standard. TrailTimer decodes it automatically; some need a specific adapter cable to reach the diagnostic port.

CAN auto-teach Teach once
The machine has its own proprietary CAN bus instead of standard OBD-II. Run Guided Setup once to find speed and RPM; after that it's remembered and loads automatically every time you connect.

Hardware-limited Not readable
These use older K-line diagnostics or have minimal ECUs that Bluetooth ELM/STN-class adapters can't reach. Live telemetry isn't available — but GPS timing still works perfectly, same as any machine.

GPS timing only Timing only
Machines where TrailTimer deliberately doesn't read the diagnostic port. Everything GPS — lap timing, events, group days — works exactly the same; there's just no live-gauges layer.

Dirt & street bikes
Bikes get the full timing app — GPS laps, events, group days. There's no practical phone-adapter telemetry for dirt or street bikes today: dirt bikes don't expose a readable bus, and street-bike diagnostic ports haven't been verified with TrailTimer yet, so we don't claim them. OBD adapters
The OBDLink CX is the recommended adapter, and most generic ELM327-compatible Bluetooth OBD-II adapters also work. Star an adapter in the app and it auto-reconnects next time.
Confirmed incompatible: the HyperTough HT500 (Bluetooth OBD2). If an adapter connects but never delivers data, try the OBDLink CX before assuming the vehicle is at fault.
Don't see your machine?
This list covers the popular families we've researched — it isn't a hard limit. If your side-by-side exposes CAN on its diagnostic port, TrailTimer's Guided Setup can often discover and teach the gauges even when the model isn't listed here. Machines on older K-line-only diagnostics can't be reached from Bluetooth adapters, but they still time perfectly over GPS.
